QN :Now that you have completed several Shadow Health simulations, how do you feel these activities will affect your ability to work with real-life patients?
Answer:
Shadow health has allowed for a safe setting to practice nursing care without feeling like your mistakes will ruin your nursing career. Shadow health has been structured to fit our criteria for advanced nurse practitioners before real life clinical takes place. I have realized that the use of shadow health has been more beneficial than what I once thought. Shadow health has influenced my ability to work with real-life patients in a positive way based on my therapeutic communication skills improving.
My ability to work with real-life patients has grown due to a foundation of communication that shadow health simulation has created for me. Therapeutic communication is the best way to get on a personal level with a patient. I have experienced patients growing fonder of me with the increased use of therapeutic communication being used. I tend to not feel so unsure on what to say when having real-life conversations. Shadow health allows for breaks between conversation for the nurse to think critically on the next question that will be asked. This allows for no awkward silences unlike the real world. I have found that shadow health has influenced my empathy skills. Before shadow health simulation, I was that nurse unable to express empathy to my patients when confronted in a conversation. Shadow health has allowed me to work on my empathy skills and translate that to real-life patients. When I was continuing to not receive points in the empathy category, I knew there was no way I don’t empathize if that situation was in real life. That was until a patient describe the death of her father to me and I stood there unsure on what to say next. From that moment on, I knew I needed to work on my therapeutic communication with emphasis on empathy. Therapeutic interpersonal relationships are capable of improving the patients’ experience while in the hospital (Kornhaber, Walsh, Duff, & Walker, 2016). That is the overall goal for a nurse and his/her patient, to improve the patient’s stay any way that is possible. Shadow health has also taught me to stay on track in a conversation while in real-life. I find it easy to ask a question about the patient’s history and then bounce around to asking about the patient’s medications. With shadow health only awarding points to questions that are asking in order and then additional questions asked on the same subject, it made me stay focused. This allows for less confusion for the patient. Therapeutic communication can also increase patient satisfaction (Fite, Assefa, Demissie, & Belachew, 2019). In real-life, satisfaction score plays an important key to hospitals/unit. Caring for the patient is a nurses first goal, but creating positive patient outcomes by improving patient satisfaction is also of importance.
In summary, shadow health has influenced my ability to work with real-life patients in a positive way based on my therapeutic communication skills improving. Therapeutic communication can be the difference between a good nurse and a great nurse. Shadow health simulation allows you to focus on your communication skills in a virtual setting where mistakes are allowed to be made. This creates a judgement free zone for advanced nurse practitioner students to practice.
